Powerball Lotto drawings are held every Wednesday and Saturday night at 10:59 PM Eastern Time. Ticket sales for the Powerball Lotto began on Thursday, April 16, 1992. The first drawing occurred Wednesday, April 22, 1992.

For each Powerball Lotto ticket you pick 5 numbers between 1 and 69 plus one additional number between 1 and 26, the "PowerBall". This creates overall odds of 1 in 24.87 for winning a prizes. That's right, one in about 25 tickets wins a cash prize. Players win a prize for matching just the "PowerBall". The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are approximately 1 in 292 million.

The minimum Powerball jackpot starts at $40 million and has surpassed the $600 million mark. See prize structure for more details and odds. The advertised jackpot amount reflects the "annuity option". Here the jackpot prize is paid in 30 annual installments. If the jackpot winner chooses to receive one lump sum payment "cash option", the prize will be approximately half the advertised jackpot. The jackpot prize must be claimed within 60 days of the drawing in order to select the "cash option". Is the jackpot prize claimed later, the annuity payout will take effect automatically. Winning Powerball tickets are valid for 180 days. All wins must be collected in the State the ticket was purchased. Please see the "Game Help" on how to claim winning tickets.

You win the jackpot by matching 5 numbers from 1 to 69 plus a "PowerBall" number from 1 to 26. There are nine ways to match and win and you win a prize simply by matching the "PowerBall". Whenever the Powerball jackpot reaches a record level, the amount of the jackpot prize is limited to increases for each draw of no more than $25 million. The prize money collected in excess of the maximum $25 million increase will be placed into the "Match 5 Bonus" prize pool and will accumulate until there is a jackpot winner. When there is a jackpot winner, the Match 5 Bonus prize pool will be divided equally among all winners of the Match 5 prize.
